Defending champion David Ferrer is only two rounds away from playing for his third Heineken Open title. Ferrer advanced into the quarterfinals in Auckland on Wednesday with a 6-4, 6-2 win against the Czech Republic’s Lukas Rosol. The top-seeded Spaniard took just 61 minutes before finding himself in the quarterfinal round where he’ll face Alejandro Falla.

Germany’s Philipp Kohlscreiber became the first player in the tournament to become a semifinalist. The tournament’s No. 8 seed, Kohlscreiber defeated No. 2 seed Nicolas Almagro, 7-6 (5), 6-4. Kohlschreiber, the winner of the tournament in 2008, will face the victor of the quarterfinal match between Benoit Paire and Olivier Rochus. Neither player is seeded.
