Brisbane Open 2012: Bernard Tomic Keeps Rolling, Serena Williams Withdraws

Bernard Tomic advanced easily into the quarterfinal round of his hometown tournament on Wednesday at the 2012 Brisbane Open. Tomic breezed through his match against qualifier Tatsuma Ito; the 19-year-old won 6-1, 6-2.

Tomic, the No. 8 seed, had multiple match points at 5-0 but was unable to convert until he had given up two games. After the match, the Aussie said the match was probably his quickest win on tour, but would have preferred it being even quicker had he not given up those match points, “maybe 6-1, 6-0.”

From the Brisbane International:

“I’m happy with the way I played if tennis was just this easy always,” he joked.

Andy Murray didn’t have it so easy. He went three sets, including two tiebreakers, against Gilles Muller of Luxembourg. Murray contributed the slow start to nerves but advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-0 victory on his heels. He will face Marcos Baghdatis, his doubles partner this week, next.

On the women’s side, Serena Williams withdrew from the Brisbane Open after aggravating an earlier ankle injury. Daniela Hatuchova advanced to the semifinals.

In the quarters, No. 6 seed Jelena Jankovic will face No. 3 seed Francesca Schiavone, while Kaia Kanepi takes on No. 2 seed Andrea Petkovic. Kanepi is the only player in the tournament to defeat a seed. She ousted No. 7 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the second round.
