BNP Paribas Open 2012 Day 6 Results: Novak Djokovic Improves To 12-1, Maria Sharapova Wins

Despite that one loss to Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic is ... well, as close to perfect as he can be.

The world No. 1’s current match player isn’t an exact replica of last years incredible 43-match win streak winner, but he’s pretty darn close.

After beating 29th seeded Kevin Anderson in the third round, Djokovic improved to 12-1 in 2012. Djokovic is the defending champion at Indian Wells. (He also won the title in 2008.) His No. 1 seed earned him enough byes to make the third-round match his first match of the tournament. And the defending champ broke serve twice during his fourth straight defeat of Anderson.

From the AP:

“He’s very aggressive on the return games,” Djokovic said. “He has a great serve, as you can imagine for his height, so I had to return well, I had to just be patient, and wait for my chances. I haven’t served well in the opening set, but then it all came down to his service games. I served well and put a lot of pressure on him and returned really, really good.”

On the women’s side, Maria Sharapova beat Simona Halep of Romania 6-3, 6-4. Sharapova, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, is a former winner of the BNP Parbias Open.

The upset of the day came when Australian qualifier Matthew Ebden uprooted American Mardy Fish, 6-3, 6-4. Fish is the tournament’s No. 8 seed.
