Dubai Championships 2012 Results Day 5: Roger Federer Into Finals After Defeating Juan Martin Del Potro

Roger Federer already has four titles from Dubai.

Now, he’ll have a shot at his fifth.

The tournament’s No. 2 seed hasn’t won a title since 2007 (partially since the past four straight years some guy named Novak Djokovic has been stealing them. That won’t be happening this year.)

Federer defeated No. 8 seeded Juan Martin Del Potro to secure the Swiss’ shot at a fifth title.

The match between the two seeds was anything but a simple straight set victory for Federer or loss for Del Potro.

It was a straight set tiebreaker battle.

Both players hit 11 aces and won 60 percent of their first serves. Despite being down 5-0 and then 6-2 in the second set tiebreaker, Federer edged his Argentine opponent, winning the semifinal match 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6). The match lasted just 12 seconds shy of two hours.

“It was a good comeback, especially on a quick court,” Federer said. “I didn’t believe I was going to come back, but at least sort of make him a bit nervous. Next thing I know, I had a great point at 6-all and I was able to come through. So it was a great match for me.”
