Family Circle Cup, Day 1 Results: Serena Williams Defeats Elena Vesnina
Williams’ service game wasn’t even spectacular by her lofty standards, but it was the biggest difference between the two players. Williams had 11 aces to Vesnina’s one, and won 57 percent of her second serve points to Vesnina’s 39 percent. She played herself into tough situations regularly in the match, but managed to save six out of seven break points against her.
Williams is coming off of a quarterfinal loss to Caroline Wozniacki in last week’s Sony Ericsson Open. Her sister, Venus Williams, is also participating in the tournament and they could potentially meet in the semifinals.
