Serena Williams became the first player go to through to the third round of the Family Circle Cup on Tuesday night with her straight sets victory over Elena Vesnina. Though Williams wasn’t on the top of her game, she comfortably progressed with a 6-3, 6-4 win.
Williams’ service game wasn’t even spectacular by her lofty standards, but it was the biggest difference between the two players. Williams had 11 aces to Vesnina’s one, and won 57 percent of her second serve points to Vesnina’s 39 percent. She played herself into tough situations regularly in the match, but managed to save six out of seven break points against her.
