Davis Cup 2012, France Vs. USA: John Isner Tops Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Puts Americans In Semifinals

The United States advanced to the semifinals of the Davis Cup on Sunday with John Isner’s win over France’s Jo-Wilifried Tsonga. It’s the first tim the U.S. has advanced this far in Davis Cup play in four years. The tall American defeated Tsonga with his rocket serve en route to a 6-3, 7-6 (4) 5-7, 6-3 win. Tsonga broke Isner’s serve only once during the match, losing in front of a partisan crowd at Monte Carlo Country Club.

Isner has had success all year on clay surfaces and he clearly had a ton of confidence coming in to Sunday’s match. Via Associated Press:

“I if play like I have this weekend, I can beat a lot of people,” Isner said, looking ahead to the contest against Spain. “Beating Gilles (Simon on Friday) and beating Jo are two very good wins. If I can keep this level up, I am going to be very hard to beat.”

While Ryan Harrison still has to play Gilles Simon, it’s a meaningless match as Isner’s victory clinched it, putting the Americans ahead 3-1. They move on to the semifinals to face Spain, the defending Davis Cup champions.
