U.S. Open 2012 Tennis Scores: Steve Johnson Wins Again

In an extremely close match, American Steve Johnson edged out Ernests Gulbis of Latvia to advance to the third round of the U.S. Open.

After dropping the first set 6-7 (3-7), Johnson won the next three 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, 6-4.

Johnson upset Rajeev Ram in the first round on Wednesday in straight sets. Gulbis was also coming off a big upset on Wednesday, knocking off Tommy Haas of Germany in five sets.

The Orange County, California native was a star at USC, becoming just the second person in history to win three national collegiate singles titles. He made his U.S. Open debut last year, losing in the first round of the men’s singles tournament to Alex Bogomolov Jr.

Steve Johnson is also competing in the mixed doubles tournament with Irina Falconi.
