Men’s No.1 Roger Federer was knocked out of the 2012 U.S. Open by sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday night. Federer broke Berdych’s serve in the first set of the match, but Berdych took control from there.

Federer was seemingly in control until he was broken at 3-2 in the first set. After falling behind 40-0, he seemed to give the break point away and went straight to the sideline to switch out his racket. Berdych went on to take the set decisively in a tiebreak, taking seven of eight points.
Federer continued to struggle in the second set, immediately going down 1-0 after failing to hold serve. He was broken again at 4-2 to give Berdych a chance to serve for the second set. Federer recovered, breaking back and holding his serve to move within 5-4. However, Berdych quelled the rally when he held to take the second set, 6-4.
Berdych got off to a quick start again in third set, breaking Federer in the opening game. Things looked bleak for the world No. 1 until he broke back to tie the set at 3-3. He would break Berdych again at 4-3, and went on to serve out the set to get himself back in the match.
Federer's comeback was short-lived, however, as Berdych broke him at 4-3 and served out the match in four sets.
Federer was previously 21-0 under the lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium. This marked the first time the No.1 has not made the semifinal in 11 years.
Berdych will advance to play Andy Murray in the quarterfinals.
