U.S. Open Tennis 2012 Results: Serena Williams Moves On And Roger Federer Falls

The women’s semifinals are set, with two spots left to fill on the men’s side after Wednesday at the 2012 U.S. Open. The day was one to remember, as Andy Roddick saw his career end, Serena Williams continued to roll, and Roger Federer met the earliest exit for a No. 1 in 11 years.

Roddick started the day with a rain-delayed fourth-round match against Juan Martin del Potro. The American star showed promise in the early going, winning the first set in a tiebreak. However, del Potro took control from there, capturing the match in four sets. Del Potro moves on to face Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals on Thursday night.

Djokovic advanced when his opponent, Stanislas Wawrinka, retired in the third set.

Williams followed Roddick with a dominating performance against former world-No.1 Ana Ivanovic. Serena took the match easily in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-3. She will take on Italy’s Sara Errani in the semifinals.

The nightcap provided the most stunning result of the day. In a tournament that has seen the favorites dominate in Arthur Ashe Stadium, the men’s No.1 could not advance beyond the quarterfinals. Federer struggled to recover from a poor start as he fell to sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych in four sets.

Berdych moves on to his first-ever U.S. Open semifinals to face No. 3 Andy Murray.

Murray was in trouble early against 12-seeded Marin Cilic in their quarterfinal match. Cilic jumped out to an early lead, taking the first set 6-3 and serving for the set up 5-1 in the second. Murray was able to battle back and break Cilic’s serve before eventually taking the second set in a tiebreak. The momentum was squarely on Murray’s side from there, as he went on to win in four sets.

The No. 3 on the women’s side also moved into the semifinals on Wednesday. Maria Sharapova dropped the first set to France’s Marion Bartoli before taking the next two to move on. Sharapova will meet top-seeded Victoria Azarenka next.

Thursday will see the men’s semifinal bracket take shape, as Djokovic and del Potro will battle to face the winner of David Ferrer and Janko Tipsarevic.
