Venus Williams and Garbine Muguruza will face off for the women’s title at Wimbledon after they prevailed in Thursday’s semifinal matchups. Muguruza, the 14th seed, completely dominated Magdalena Rybarikova in the first one, 6-1, 6-1. The second match saw Williams take down Johanna Konta in slightly less dominant but still impressive fashion, 6-4, 6-2.

Muguruza made it to the finals of Wimbledon in 2015, and many thought she was on her way to becoming one of the more dominant players in tennis. The following year, she won the title at the French Open.

But she did run into some hard luck at that point. Rybarikova, an unseeded player, had a brilliant run through Wimbledon, but Muguruza proved to be too much on Thursday. Muguruza won on 74 percent of her first serves and won 19 of 25 net points. She converted on five of 12 break point attempts, while Rybarikova failed her lone break attempt.

Muguruza took down top seed Angelique Kerber in straight sets in the fourth round, and bested seventh seed Svetlana Kuznetsova in the quarterfinals. Her finals appearance in 2015 was her only time seeing the Wimbledon final previously.

Venus looks for sixth Wimbledon singles title

Serving at 4-4 in the first set, Williams faced the first break of the match. Konta had multiple break opportunities, but let all of them get away. Williams held, and then she went on to break Konta on the next service game to take the opening set at 6-4.

In the second set, Williams went up 4-1, and threatened a break to go up 5-1, but Konta barely fought to deuce and held on. Williams then held, and Konta was serving to stay in the match. Williams failed to convert on a big match point, but then got back to deuce and eventually sealed the deal with a break.

Williams, 37, will make her ninth appearance in the Wimbledon singles final. She’s already won five titles, with her first in 2000 and most recent in 2008. Playing alongside her sister Serena, she’s also a six-time Wimbledon doubles champion, which includes the 2016 title.

The men’s semifinals will take place on Friday. Roger Federer will take on Tomas Berdych and Marin Cilic will face Sam Querrey to decide the finalists in that singles bracket. Keep up with all the men’s singles action here and all the women’s singles action here.
