Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic spent a combined 82 minutes on the grass courts of Wimbledon for their opening matches on Tuesday. Both players advanced to the second round as their opponents retired, and both will be among the freshest players going forward.
Wimbledon results 2017: Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer catch big breaks on Day 2
Djokovic and Federer benefited from retirements from their first-round opponents, and made it through to the second round as easily as possible.

For Federer, his opponent was Alexandr Dolgopolov, who trailed by a set and by three games in the second set when he retired with an ankle injury. Djokovic was up a set and change on Martin Klizan, who retired with a leg injury, ending his bid.
Djokovic and Federer are the second and third seeds, respectively. Djokovic has struggled this year though, and many have suggested he’s lost what made him so dominant not that long ago. Federer skipped the clay court season to be fresh for Wimbledon, and now he’s got even more rest.
Women’s top seed Angelique Kerber breezed through her opener, Irina Falconi, 6-4, 6-4. Kerber was bounced in the first round of the French Open and has had similar struggles to Djokovic this year. But she looked great on Tuesday and will move on to the second round.
The women’s field is without Serena Williams, and with Kerber’s struggles, it is likely wide open once again. The French Open was wide open, as evidenced by the fact that an unseeded Jelena Ostapenko managed to secure the title.
Karolina Pliskova, the third seed, is one of the women vying for the title and she looked great on Tuesday, downing Evgeniya Rodina in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Agnieszka Radwanska, the ninth seed, bested Jelena Jankovic in straight sets, 7-6(3), 6-0. On the men’s side, sixth seed Milos Raonic took down Jan-Lennard Struff in his opener, 7-6(5), 6-2, 7-6(4).
