The New Day have been WWE Tag Team Champions for five months, and they’ll hang onto those titles for a bit longer after defeating The Usos at the Royal Rumble.
Royal Rumble 2016 results: The New Day retains WWE Tag Team Championships, defeating The Usos
Every other tag team is booty.
These are the two most successful tag teams of the last two years in WWE, but they didn’t feud directly until very recently. The New Day’s rise coincided with an injury to Jey Uso, so the two teams haven’t met in any title matches that only involved these two teams.
Big E and Kofi Kingston were the two New Day members who competed as usual, with Xavier Woods doing his regular shtick on the outside -- playing trombone, quoting video game characters and blatantly cheating. He hit Jey with a tornado DDT on the outside early in the match, which the referee failed to spot.
The Usos thought they had the titles won when they hit a superkick and top rope splash on Kofi, but he was smart enough to get his foot on the bottom rope, if it wasn’t put there by Woods -- the camera work left it a bit ambiguous. They thought they had him again, but missed Big E making a tag. As Jimmy Uso went for a second splash, Big E snuck into the ring, caught Jimmy and hit the Big Ending for the victory.
Not only are the New Day still the champs, but they retained via means we haven’t seen too many times -- with a fair maneuver, after a very minimal amount of cheating.
