The new WWE World Heavyweight Champion is Triple H, who’s captured a world-level title for the 14th time in his career. He was the final entrant in the Royal Rumble, which was all about his Authority faction trying to get the title off of Roman Reigns.
This was the first time in history that the WWE World Heavyweight Championship was defended in the Royal Rumble. The one other time that it was up for grabs in this match was in 1992, when Ric Flair won the vacant title in one of the greatest matches of all time.

A.J. Styles makes WWE debut at the Royal Rumble


After weeks of speculation, ROH and TNA star A.J. Styles made his debut in WWE in the 2015 Royal Rumble match. He came out as the No. 3 entrant in the match to an uproarious crowd. The Phenomenal One came out as Roman Reigns eliminated Rusev. Roman Reigns was notably confused but fans definitely welcomed him with open arms.
The writing was on the wall for a few days as Styles had heartfelt goodbyes in his previous bookings, all but confirming his arrival to WWE.

Once again, Charlotte retained the Divas Championship at the Royal Rumble, beating Becky Lynch with the help of her father. But the big story came afterwards when Sasha Banks showed up and beat up both contenders before holding up the belt herself.
Charlotte and Becky came up to the main roster in a team together during painful, though ultimately successful Divas Revolution. Their best friend breakup came as the result of Charlotte decided she’d do anything to win and keep the title, just like her father, Ric Flair. Since that split, Flair has been in his daughter’s corner for all of her matches, regularly cheating for her, including in title matches against Becky. On Raw, Lynch baited Flair — Charlotte’s manager — into giving Becky a title shot.

For the second time, Kalisto is the WWE United States Champion, defeating Alberto Del Rio in the third title match between the two.
Kalisto won his first U.S. title shot earlier in the month when he beat Del Rio in a non-title match. That led to him getting a title shot, and he beat Del Rio to capture his first ever singles title in WWE. Del Rio won a rematch, thanks to interference from his League of Nations teammate Wade Barrett, setting up this rubber match at the Royal Rumble.

These are the two most successful tag teams of the last two years in WWE, but they didn’t feud directly until very recently. The New Day’s rise coincided with an injury to Jey Uso, so the two teams haven’t met in any title matches that only involved these two teams.

Ambrose and Owens have been feuding over the Intercontinental title over the last couple of months, ever since Ambrose lost to Roman Reigns in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship tournament and turned his attention on this title. Ambrose beat Owens for the IC strap at TLC in December, and they’ve been beating the heck out of each other ever since.

Mark Henry and Jack Swagger are in the Royal Rumble match after winning a qualifying match before the main card of Royal Rumble 2016 kicked off. They defeated the Dudley Boys and the Ascension, as well as the makeshift team of Damien Sandow and Darren Young, who turned out to be the crowd’s favorites in this match.
Despite being in WWE for years, the Dudley Boys weren’t regular competitors in the Royal Rumble during the Attitude Era. Bubba Ray Dudley made a surprise return to the company during last year’s Rumble, and the commentary team noted that D-Von Dudley has never competed in the match.
