It’s hard to imagine the Twins coming back from the sort of psychic disappointment levied by their 9th-inning collapse against the Yankees on Friday night, especially when you consider how the Yankees cruised in Game One. There is a serious talent gap between these two teams, particularly on the offensive end. Mr. Pavano might be lucky to get out of the Metrodome alive.

The Twins had two runners in scoring position. Then Phil Hughes came in. In relief of Sabathia, Hughes came in and struck out Orlando Cabrera to end the inning. Hughes will likely work the 8th, too, meaning the Twins are in deep trouble: Hughes-Rivera is not a duo you want to trail by four runs. This is an obvious thing to say, but that doesn’t make it any less true.

This could get bad: A-Rod singled in Derek Jeter from second to the great approval of Penny Lane, which prompted Ron Gardenhire to replace Brian Duensing with Fransisco Liriano. That didn’t go so well: Matsui hit a “towering” — there’s another one of those Chip Caray words — two-run home run to give the Yankees a 6-2 advantage. This could get bad in the next few innings, but for now, the damage is done.

A-Rod’s a choke! He totally could have just knocked Derek Jeter in from second with two outs, but instead just hit a hard line drive to the opposite that died in the wind and fell safely into Jason Kubel’s glove. What a jerk!
All jokes aside, the Yankees and Twins are still tied at 0 after 1. Given the differences in ability — not to mention average salary — between these two teams, I’d think the Twins would be pretty pleased with that.
