If you live on the East Coast like me, it started out as an innocent curiosity. What’s going on, out there?
Another Upset for USC: Washington Tops Trojans 16-13
Then, it gradually became more and more infuriating that neither ABC nor ESPN would deign to show the USC-Washington matchup that kept popping up as a suspiciously close game. When it hit the fourth quarter and the game was still tied--with the Trojans operating without their starting quarterback and best defensive (Taylor Mays) player--it became apparent that this wasn't just a fluke.
One game-winning field goal later, and it was time for our own Spencer Hall to weigh in:
No typos, no errors: Washington 16, USC 13, and a defeated Pete Carroll walks off the field in Seattle thanks to 0-10 on 3rd downs, three turnovers, and a heart-pounding effort by the Washington Huskies. Who’s cheering? BYU, Boise State, TCU, and every other team hoping for a rogue BCS-buster spot. Struggling is defined as this: at one point USC was considering putting in third-string qb Mitch Mustain to spark a passing attack that only amassed 110 yards on the day.
This is the biggest upset of the year thus far, so expect plenty of coverage to follow. For now, I’ll leave you with a tweet that emerged in the third quarter, from one of my colleagues at The Sporting Blog:
