Semyon Varlamov and Michael Nylander appeared to be the starter heading into the season, but it looks like Washington Capitals will instead look to veteran Jose Theodore to lead them in goal.

Corey Masiak of the Washington Times, who’s been all over this story from the start, reports that Theodore will, indeed, get the start tonight. But nothing’s set in stone for the Caps, as Varlamov will start Saturday, leaving a permanent solution up in the air for Washington:

Corey Masiak of the Washington Times is reporting that the Washington Capitals and head coach Bruce Boudreau will start Jose Theodore (nee “Jose Three-or-more”) in goal tomorrow night’s home opener vs. the Bruins. In other words, despite 21 year-old Semyon Varlamov’s promising play during last season’s playoff run, the Caps will go to war—at least initially—with last season’s incumbent.

It was an interesting battle to follow in training camp and Capitals fans should be encouraged by both players. We all know what we can expect from Varlamov after he exploded on the scene in the playoffs last season. We don’t know as much about Nuevirth but he was the AHL Playoff MVP. The Capitals will be set with goaltending for years to come.
