Wednesday afternoon, at 2 p.m. ET, the Baseball Writers Association of America will announce its winner of the 2010 American League Manager of the Year Award. And, from the looks of things, Texas’ Ron Washington could and should be the frontrunner.
2010 A.L. Manager Of The Year Award Should Go To Ron Washington
Few could have predicted that the year would turn out so well for Washington after it was revealed in March that he had tested positive for cocaine. However, the Rangers organization stood by its manager, and they were rewarded as Washington guided the team to a first-place finish and a 90-72 record. It was Texas' first division win since 1999, and it required that Washington handle a number of youngsters and veterans.
A contender will be Minnesota's Ron Gardenhire. Gardenhire guided the Twins to a 94-68 record, which they accomplished without Joe Nathan and with a half season from superstar Justin Morneau. It was Gardenhire's second consecutive first-place finish, and sixth in nine years, but it was also arguably his toughest.
If Maddon wins, it will be his second in three seasons. Meanwhile, a victory would be a first for Washington or Gardenhire. Last year’s winner was Anaheim’s Mike Scioscia.
