In what might come as a bit of a surprise, the results of the 2010 American League Manager of the Year Award voting are out, and the winner is none other than Minnesota’s Ron Gardenhire, who beat out runner-up Ron Washington.
2010 A.L. Manager Of The Year Is Minnesota’s Ron Gardenhire
Gardenhire picked up 16 of a possible 28 first-place votes, with Texas’ Washington getting ten, Tampa Bay’s Joe Maddon getting one, and Toronto’s Cito Gaston getting one. The full table of results, courtesy of the BBWAA, can be seen at the end of the post.
Gardenhire earned widespread support for leading the Twins to a 94-68 record and an AL Central division title despite injuries to Joe Nathan and Justin Morneau that kept the former out all year, and limited the latter to 81 games. Despite the adversity, the Twins caught fire down the stretch and blew past both the Tigers and the White Sox in making the playoffs for the sixth time in nine seasons.
This is the first Manager of the Year award for Gardenhire after finishing second in the voting in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2009. He joins Tom Kelly (1991) as the only winners in Twins history.
