The first domino has fallen in the MLS Expansion Draft as the New York Red Bulls have sent Jeremy Hall to the Portland Timbers in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2011 SuperDraft.
MLS Expansion Draft: Red Bulls Trade Jeremy Hall To Timbers For ‘11 Draft Pick
Hall has played mostly as a defender for the Red Bulls since they made him the No. 11 overall pick in the 2009 SuperDraft. Hall played mostly as a midfielder at Maryland.
Despite being considered one of the top talents in that year’s draft, Hall has never really developed. He has made 31 starts in two seasons, but just nine of those came this season.
“We want to thank Jeremy for his service to the club,” New York Red Bulls General Manager and Sporting Director Erik Soler told the team’s website. “We think that this is a mutually beneficial decision for Jeremy and the club. At his age and given his bright future, Jeremy needs to play more matches and we believe that this is the best move for him.”
In the past, trades like this have often been made with the understanding that the expansion team agrees not to take any other players from that team’s roster.
MLS teams have already submitted their expansion protection lists, but those have not been made available to the public yet. Those lists should be available at 5 p.m. Eastern.
As a reminder, these were our projections.
