Golf Channel’s Charlie Rymer Tears Up While Praising Tiger Woods’ Penitence
“His true legacy is his children,” the Golf Channel’s Charlie Rymer says during a rather emotional recap of Tiger Woods’ earth-stopping Friday morning statement. “Now they’ll have a chance to say, ‘You know what? Our dad made horrible mistakes. But look what he did after he made those mistakes.’”
It’s good to know that Charlie Rymer is so affected by the hardships of their own creation endured by multimillionaires and their children, and that he sees as much value in Tiger being able to give his children -- his daughter, Sam, is a little over 32 months old -- this valuable lesson about second chances in American lives. I’m not even particularly upset about him getting upset, or about Golf Channel televising it. His rights as a human being entitle him to whatever emotions he wants to express, and it’s certainly going to draw attention to a cable channel that, save the occasional embarrassing gaffe, has the profile of a prairie dog.
But, at the risk of assuming a man who makes a living commenting on golf has some sense of perspective beyond how heavy-handed the Tiger Woods hagiography should be, I want to hear how Charlie Rymer reacted to the Haitian earthquake. Because I actually care about how people react to that.
