The Ballad of Brett Favre: Please Let This Be a Career Coda
↵↵Thanks -- I guess? -- go to Deadspin and Business Socks of Style Points for debuting “The Ballad of Brett Favre” to the world. If you are listening to it, you probably understand my hesitation to celebrate the find: this song is an exhaustive recounting of Favre’s career and bereft of much redeeming musical value. A few sample lyrics:↵
- ↵↵⇥⇥⇥⇥⇥⇥↵⇥“No one could equal what he has done.”
- ⇥⇥⇥↵⇥“At Hancock North Central, gave many a thrill.”
- ⇥⇥⇥↵⇥“He was traded to Green Bay, yessir, for a song.”
- ⇥⇥⇥↵⇥“He’s Brett Favre, the best there might be.”
- ⇥⇥⇥↵⇥“He gives all the credit to God, team, Green Bay and New York Jet fans.”
↵↵↵Also, Gayle Cuervas, who wrote the song his sons Chris and Kevin perform, managed to get Favre’s father’s name wrong -- it’s Irvin, not Irving -- and craft a chorus that inexplicably uses the following in a hook: “He’s no singer, he’s no picker / No race car driver, but he’s a winner.” And this doesn’t quite cover his playoff flameout with Minnesota, but that’s probably for the best. I’m not entirely sure these folks could sing a verse about that without sobbing.↵
↵↵But why can’t this just be our last memory of Brett Favre? It’s schmaltzy, drenched in a folksy aura, and better in concept than execution because those involved are clearly trying too hard. Isn’t that a perfect summation of Favre?↵
