Tuesday night, Scott Van Pelt was hoaxed by a prank caller. Thursday night, he got hosed by a microphone that stayed live as SportsCenter cut to commercial. Warning: This video contains a profanity.
Scott Van Pelt Stars in Worst (SportsCenter) Week Ever
Van Pelt apologized when the show returned from commercial, but this caps a pretty bad week for Van Pelt. And that's when just SportsCenter is concerned: he also managed to have an embarrassing moment at last week's thrilling Maryland win over Georgia Tech. As he explains in this unembeddable video, Van Pelt was in College Park to see Cliff Tucker's buzzer-beater, and, in the madness after the shot, managed to fall off a seat in the stands, which was captured on film.
It's possible Van Pelt may face discipline for his lapse, but ESPN should be fine. The profanity happened at about 11:20 p.m. Eastern Time, which is past the FCC's 10 p.m. boundary for actionable indecent language, and Saturday Night Live didn't get fined for the obscenity of a cast member last fall.
(HTs to Only Gators for snagging the video, and The Sports Geeks for YouTubing it.)
