Weekend Wake Up: ‘Cuse Crushes ‘Nova, Canada’s Gold Rush, Vick and Owens Moving?

Carnage at the Carrier Dome. Syracuse trailed Villanova 30-26 late in the first half when Scoop Jardine hit a three to touch off a 20-6 run. The Orange didn’t need any runs in the second half; Rick Jackson had 19 points, Arinze Onuaku contributed 17, and the Orange romped 95-77 in the most-attended on-campus game in college basketball history. Could Syracuse be the best team in the land? Maybe.
Gold, Canada. Canada cannot “Own the Podium” by taking home the most medals in these Olympics. But they did set a record for most golds in one Winter Games: First-place finishes in men’s pursuit, snowboarding, and men’s curling gave Canada 13 golds as of Saturday night. The Canucks could add to that haul with a win in men’s hockey on Sunday, but they’ll have to beat the United States -- owners of the record for most total medals in one Winter Olympics -- to do so.
Greener Pastures for Vick, Owens? If reports of the Eagles trading Michael Vick for a mid-round draft pick are true, then Philly’s gamble on Vick paid off. They acquired Vick for a song when he was almost radioactive, turned him into both an asset for their team and a trade chip for others, and proved that Vick wasn’t even a risk. Their vindication is probably something Buffalo isn’t enjoying after declining to offer a contract to Terrell Owens. The Bills brought Owens in to make a run at the AFC East; Owens played well, but the Bills ran aground anyway, ensuring the only headlines about Owens being in town would be from pundits trying to make him a team cancer. He wasn’t, but the Bills continued making their fans sick anyway.
