More bad news for England’s national soccer team: just two weeks after David Beckham tore his Achilles’ tendon, forcing him out of this summer’s World Cup, striker Wayne Rooney suffered an ankle injury Tuesday night near the end of Manchester United’s match with Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Wayne Rooney Injured In Manchester United Match, Left On Crutches
Come to think of it, this is not bad news. This is Wayne Rooney, the striker who’s scored 34 goals this season for United, and the likely pick for Player of the Year. He’s the new face of England’s national team. The World Cup begins in a little more than two months. This is potentially disastrous news, for all involved.
For now though, it’s still only a “wait and see” situation, said United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
”He’s got a kick in the ankle, we’ll just have to see tomorrow (Wednesday). Let’s hope it’s not too serious. He may be doubtful for Saturday. It’s too early to say.
“He’s being treated by our medics at the moment. We’ll see what it’s like tomorrow.”
Despite that optimism, Rooney was seen leaving the stadium on crutches, with his right foot in a protective boot. He will stay overnight in Germany and will undergo tests on Wednesday. Already, there are fears that Rooney may have broken his metatarsal bones in his foot for the fourth time in six years.
Mario Gómez, the Bayern substitute, accidentally trod on Rooney’s foot and the United player immediately pulled away, crumpling to the floor in obvious distress and twisting his ankle as he fell. He had to be helped off the pitch by three members of United’s backroom staff, unable to put any weight on his injured foot.
United is set to battle Chelsea in an English Premier League match on Saturday. When asked about Rooney’s status for that match, Ferguson could only say, “I can’t answer that, we will know better on Wednesday.”
