Shane Roller squared off with Anthony Njokuani in a battle of hyped lightweight prospects. The bout was sold as an old school battle of striker against grappler and it played out exactly that way.
WEC 48 Results: Shane Roller Submits Anthony Njokuani In First Round
Roller ran across the ring immediately and began working for a takedown. Njokuani was able to defend the takedown briefly but eventually got taken down and Roller was in Njokuani’s half guard. It was a quick pass to mount and then back control. Once Roller had the back he continually worked for a rear naked choke while holding on with a body triangle. Eventually he was able to get the arm under the chin and sink in the choke for the submission.
It wasn’t what many hoped to see given Njokuani’s history as an explosive kickboxer but you can’t fault Roller for dominating the grappling for every second of the fight.
