Now that it’s been determined that Broncos LT Ryan Clady was injured in a pick-up basketball game, the question becomes what will the Broncos do?
Could The Broncos Take Action Against Ryan Clady For Injury In Non-Football Activity?
Some contracts are written up to protect the team in the instance a player is injured in a non-football-related activity. SB Nation’s Mile High Report pulled out the CBA and did some digging.
Check MHR for the full review but here’s the key question:
If the Broncos have a Rule that prevents any player from playing contact sports outside the NFL League related boundary (such as Basketball), they could ask for a portion of Clady’s salary back if he misses a portion of the season. Clady is scheduled to earn $2,569,500 in 2010, so if he was to miss 6 games due to inappropriate conduct, it could cost him upward of $900,000. Of course this is all contingent on the possibility that Ryan is guilty for such conduct and the Broncos wish to pursue such an action.
MHR Radio had Vic Lombardi on last night to discuss the situation and he suggested the Broncos are unlikely to take any action even if the contract allows them to.
Check out the full report from MHR. Interesting stuff.
