Grady Sizemore Transferred To 60-Day DL As He Prepares For Knee Surgery

Grady Sizemore first hurt his knee in spring training. He reaggravated the injury in the middle of May and went on the DL. It was initially diagnosed as a deep bone bruise, but there was concern that Sizemore may have torn the cartilage. Now he’s going to go under the knife as doctors try to figure out the extent of the damage.

At minimum, Grady Sizemore will miss another six to eight weeks of the 2010 season because of the knee injury he suffered two weeks ago.
...
The actual date of Sizemore’s surgery has not yet been determined, nor has the official prognosis for his anticipated return. Head athletic trainer Lonnie Soloff did not provide specifics on the other potential procedures that might arise during the knee scope, but he did not dispute that microfracture surgery is a possibility. If that procedure is performed, it would significantly lengthen Sizemore’s stay on the DL, likely through and beyond season’s end.

Being on the 60-day DL keeps Sizemore out at least through the All Star Break. However, if he’s in need of a microfracture procedure, then the timetable changes significantly. It’s just the latest bad break in what’s been a miserable season for the Indians.

26 year old Trevor Crowe has received a lot of playing time in the outfield in Sizemore’s absence, and that’s going to continue for as long as Sizemore’s out. Michael Brantley is also expected to be recalled from AAA Columbus at some point to get more big league exposure.
