When in doubt, go yard. That’s what TCU did to beat Florida St. and eliminate the Seminoles, while also setting the Horned Frogs up for a rematch with UCLA on Friday. Trailing 7-2 and one point and 7-3 going to the eighth inning, TCU put together eight runs in the eighth to erase the deficit and avoid elimination.
2010 College World Series: Big Eighth Inning Leads TCU To 11-7 Win Over Florida St.
The big blast came from Matt Curry, who with a 3-2 count, two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth, got all of a pitch and hit it well over the center field fence for a grand slam that turned a two run deficit into a two run lead. From there, the Horned Frogs got another home run, this one of the two run variety, to grab an 11-7 lead and a smooth final six outs delivered them the key victory.
While TCU’s bat finally woke up and did the necessary damage to pick up the W, Florida St. will look back at their inability to catch the ball as the reason their season has come to a close. Five Seminole errors resulted in 10 of TCU’s runs being unearned and eventually, their elimination.
Now, TCU will get a rematch with UCLA, again with their backs against the wall. on Monday, the Bruins defeated the Horned Frogs, 6-3, and now TCU will have to beat UCLA on both Friday and Saturday. Meanwhile, UCLA has to win just one of the games on Friday and Saturday, if necessary. As the final two teams in bracket one, whoever can avoid elimination on Friday and Saturday will move on to the best of three Championship Series, two wins away from a national title.
