Joel Zumaya Seriously Injured During 8th Inning Appearance

Ace Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya, who entered play Monday with a 2.63 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 37.2 innings, seriously injured himself throwing a pitch against Delmon Young. After throwing the pitch, Zumaya flailed his right arm around before kneeling over and grimacing. As the coaches and training staff came out, Zumaya's forearm was twitching, and two trainers helped him walk off the field as he held his elbow.

Zumaya has been plagued with injuries before, but never to his elbow. If this is serious - and all indications are that it is - it will deal a big blow to the Tigers’ playoff chances, and a bigger blow to Zumaya’s career, which finally seemed back on track.
