Tyson Gay: Usain Bolt ‘Wasn’t A Hundred Percent’

Minutes after handing Usain Bolt his first defeat in more than two years, American sprinter Tyson Gay made some comments that demonstrated a remarkable amount of pragmatism:

“It feels good but I know he (Bolt) wasn’t 100 percent,” said former world champion Gay, whose previous season’s best was 9.94 secs in Gateshead last month.

”I’m still looking for the day that we are both 100 percent and I beat him.

”He knows about his limitations and I’m a realist, I know this is an off year for him.

”His goal this season was to go undefeated but I guess that won’t happen now.

“I was very focussed and I really wanted this. I’ve never had any doubts that I will beat Usain Bolt over 100m.”

It’s somewhat unusual to see an athlete qualify his opponent’s condition, then claim that he will beat him when he’s at full strength, but that’s what Gay is doing here. Also worth noting: Gay terms Bolt’s 2010 as an “off year” even though Bolt has not lost a race this year, which speaks to how thoroughly Bolt has dominated this sport as of late.
