The Diamondbacks, who fired general manager Josh Byrnes during the season and replaced him with Jerry DiPoto, would like to identify a permanent man for a job by the end of the year. Nick Piecoro saw DiPoto, Kevin Towers, and Logan White as the three strongest contenders for the job. Now, according to Ed Price, the team is down to two names:
Report: Kevin Towers, Jerry DiPoto Look Like Finalists In Diamondbacks’ GM Search
Source: #Diamondbacks have eliminated #Dodgers assistant GM Logan White in their GM search. Seems down to Kevin Towers or Jerry DiPoto.
DiPoto has been in charge since the first of July, and he's already made a number of trades involving names like Edwin Jackson and Dan Haren. Additionally, the Diamondbacks have been more competitive since the organizational shakeup, which is a point in DiPoto's favor. Other people in the organization like the work he's done in a short period of time.
Kevin Towers was the long-standing general manager of the Padres, and currently works as a scout for the Yankees. San Diego made the playoffs several times under his regime and once went as far as the World Series, largely succeeding despite low to moderate payrolls. While Towers is an accomplished, experienced GM, though, he wouldn't come as cheaply as DiPoto, and he's also expected to attract interest from elsewhere, including the Mets and very possibly the Mariners.
