It took a few years to really mean much outside of the two home markets, but the Rocky Mountain Cup might just be the most important rivalry in MLS right now. In Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids we have the two most recent MLS Cup champions and, arguably, the two best teams in the league today.
Real Salt Lake Vs. Colorado Rapids: Rocky Mountain Cup Really Means Something Now
RSL is coming off a week in which they clinched a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League, the first MLS team to ever accomplish that feat, and then improved to 3-0-0 on the season with a 2-0 victory over the New England Revolution despite starting a bunch of reserves. So far, they are outscoring their opponents by an average margin of two goals and including their four CCL matches they've played this year, they have posted a +11 goal-difference over seven matches.
The Rapids are coming off a loss in Week 4, but before that were absolutely dismantling teams. They had won their first three matches as well, also posting a +6 goal-difference in those matches. Like RSL the year before, they actually seem better than the team that actually won the Cup, having added talents like Caleb Folan to what was already an impressive strikeforce.
Leading up to Wednesday’s match, SB Nation will be bringing you all you need to know about the first installment of this year’s rivalry.
