Real Salt Lake Vs. Colorado Rapids: Jamie Smith Likely Will Start For Pablo Mastroeni
One of the hallmarks of Gary Smith's Colorado Rapids teams has been the use of a pretty standard 4-4-2 in which two holding/defensive central midfielders are used. Usually, that means Jeff Larentowicz and Pablo Mastroeni playing alongside one another. But with Mastroeni out for Wednesday's game against Real Salt Lake, it looks like Smith is switching it up and using Jamie Smith in more of an attacking role. Burugndy Wave, SB Nation's Colorado Rapids blog, looks at what this could mean:
Jamie is one of the bigger wildcards on the team, being one of the best players in the first three games of the season and then turning invisible against FC Dallas last week. His two goals are tied for the team lead, and he's already shown before that he has the creativity and offensive flair to be an attacking central midfielder as he played the position against the Portland Timbers, but it will be interesting nonetheless to watch him try and play a full 90 minutes in the position for the first time as a Rapid.
