On Tuesday afternoon, Cubs starter Andrew Cashner made his first start of the season against the Diamondbacks, and for a while, he was cruising. He allowed just a run on two hits through the first five innings, and looked to be in a groove.
Andrew Cashner Leaves Start With Shoulder Tightness
But then, with one out in the top of the sixth, he issued a walk to Willie Bloomquist - his first walk of the game - and the trainer came out of the dugout. After an involved mound meeting in which Cashner tested his grip by grabbing catcher Koyie Hill's hand, Cashner came out of the game having thrown just 72 pitches.
Initially, one figured he might have a problem with his hand, but the word from the dugout is that Cashner was pulled with right shoulder tightness. And though this is only the preliminary word and Cashner has not yet been examined, it’s definitely a cause for concern, as you don’t like your pitchers to have problems with their shoulders.
Stay tuned as the story develops. Recall that the Cubs recently released starting rotation candidate Carlos Silva, limiting their depth.
