In the top of the sixth inning of Sunday's game between the Cardinals and Braves, reliever Scott Linebrink hit David Freese in the hand with a pitch. Freese remained in the game to run the bases, but he was removed soon thereafter, and upon further investigation it was revealed that Freese has a broken bone in his hand.

Said Freese:
“It didn’t feel too good and it didn’t sound too good,” Freese said. “So right when it happened, I knew something was up. But I finished it out on the bases and then came out.”
Freese will presumably be placed on the disabled list any time now, and there’s a possibility that he’ll need surgery to fix the bone. Even if he doesn’t, he’ll be out for a good amount of time, which is highly unfortunate given his .356 average.
Daniel Descalso slid over to third base to take Freese's place in the game, and it stands to reason that he and Nick Punto will gain the most playing time for as long as Freese is out. Recall that the Cardinals are also currently without injured infielder Skip Schumaker.
