Some good news for a St. Louis Cardinals team that's playing without Albert Pujols, courtesy of KSDK:
David Freese, Nick Punto Return To Cardinals From DL
The St. Louis Cardinals activated David Freese and Nick Punto from the 15-day disabled list.
...
To make room for Freese and Punto on their 25-man roster, the Cardinals optioned infielder Pete Kozma and outfielder Andrew Brown to Memphis (AAA).
The big news here is Freese. Way back on May 1, Freese was hit in the hand by an errant fastball from Scott Linebrink, and suffered a bone fracture. He was given a 9-12 week timetable for recovery, but here he is, back after eight weeks instead. Freese got into four rehab games with triple-A Memphis and returns to an .865 OPS. More Freese should mean less Daniel Descalso.
Punto's also back from a forearm strain, and the utility infielder will provide some depth and stability behind Freese, Skip Schumaker, and Ryan Theriot. Punto left with a .740 OPS, and while he isn't actually that good of a hitter, he can work the occasional walk, and he's gifted in the field.
So in sum, the Cardinals have lost one superstar, but they’ve re-gained some handy support pieces. Who needs walls, anyway? Buttress the buttresses!
