Cardinals third baseman David Freese was supposed to be out for a long time after undergoing surgery to repair a broken hand. And, for sure, he has been out a long time. But his recovery has gone very smoothly to date, with Freese having declared that he's ahead of schedule, and now he's drawing ever closer to returning to the Majors. Derrick Goold:
David Freese Injury: Cardinals 3B Beginning Rehab Tuesday
Freese says he'll be in Memphis lineup Tuesday to start rehab assignment.
Tuesday is June 21, and for Freese to begin a minor league rehab assignment on June 21 would put him in line to return to the Cardinals by the end of the month. The rehab assignment is basically his final step in recovery.
Lately, third base in St. Louis has been split between Daniel Descalso, Albert Pujols and Matt Carpenter. The team has survived, but Freese will bring some additional stability and production when he comes back. When he got injured, he had just four walks and 23 strikeouts, but he also had an .865 OPS.
