First, some necessary background. Here's Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro, on Thursday:
Domonic Brown Recalled By Phillies To Replace Shane Victorino
The team will announce Victorino's replacement Friday, although general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said it will not be Triple-A Lehigh Valley outfielder Domonic Brown.
Now, on Friday:
Domonic Brown recalled. Victorino to DL.
After watching his team lose 7-1 to the Rockies Thursday night, it seems Amaro changed his mind. With Shane Victorino going on the disabled list with a hamstring strain, here comes top prospect Brown, fresh off some big success with AAA Lehigh Valley.
Brown was a candidate to make the Phillies out of camp before he broke a bone in his hand, sidelining him into April. Once healthy, he was optioned to AAA, but all he's done there is go 14-for-41 with a .968 OPS. He looks to be all better, and with Victorino out and Raul Ibanez and Ben Francisco both struggling, Brown has the potential to inject some real life into the Phillies' outfield and lineup.
Over 70 trips to the plate with the Phillies a year ago, Brown batted .210 with two home runs. But then, few are the rookies who make an immediate impact. Baseball America ranked him the #4 prospect in baseball before 2011 for a reason.
