Mets’ Chris Young Replaced At Last Minute By Dillon Gee

Don’t you love it when a plan comes together? Andrew Keh:

At 7:05 p.m. Saturday, five minutes before the Mets took the field against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Mets announced that the right-hander Chris Young would be scratched from his start because he could not get loose in the bullpen. The rookie right-hander Dillon Gee started instead.

Okay, so it wasn't exactly a masterpiece. But Gee did strand six Dodgers in the first two innings without allowing a run, and he did pitch into the sixth inning. Not bad considering he figured on having the night off until a few minutes before the game was supposed to start (and bonus points for retiring Andre Ethier twice).

Meanwhile, who knows when Chris Young will pitch again? As Keh points out, Young has answered the bell only 40 times since 2007, due to a variety of shoulder and (lately) bicep injuries. As close as he came to pitching Saturday night, perhaps we should assume he will actually pitch before long. Just don’t be surprised if Dillon Gee starts more games for the Mets this season than Chris Young.
