College World Series 2011, Virginia Vs. California Final Score: Cavaliers’ Late Offensive Surge Sends Cal To 4-1 Loss
Virginia LHP Danny Hultzen was the player of the game. He kept Cal off the board for 6.1 innings, allowing just three hits and striking out six. He did look shaky early on, walking two in the first inning, but he settled down after that. He also drew two walks as the team’s designated hitter.
Cal’s starter Erik Johnson wasn’t as settled as Hultzen, as he walked five batters. However, he did allow just two base hits and zero runs in three innings. But it was his bullpen that lost the game. Logan Scott allowed a single and a walk to start the seventh before he was pulled for Matt Flemer. Unfortunately for the Bears, Flemer allowed both inherited runners to score.
Cal’s Kevin Miller allowed two more runs on a triple and a single in the bottom of the eighth. The Bears did manage to put one run on the board with a couple of singles in the top of the ninth, but that was all they could muster before a foul out ended the game.
Virginia will player the winner of Sunday night’s game between South Carolina and Texas A&M. That game can be seen on ESPN2 or streamed from ESPN3.com at 7 p.m. ET.
