Jimmy Rollins has been out of action for a few days after fouling a ball off of his right knee. X-rays were negative for any breaks, and an MRI was negative for any structural damage, but perhaps we were too hasty in saying that Rollins was simply day-to-day. It turns out he's not doing so hot:
Jimmy Rollins Injury: Bone Bruise May Require DL Stint
Amaro says Rollins MRI shows significant bone bruise. Could be DL candidate if doesn't improve next 24 to 48 hours
A bone bruise is, obviously, much better than a break, a fracture, or a tear of some sort, but it’s still painful, and sometimes these things can take a while to heal. Just look at Eric Chavez’s foot. So Rollins isn’t out of the woods yet, at least as far as a DL stint is concerned. He’ll have to show sufficient and rapid improvement.
On the one hand, the last thing the Phillies need is another semi-significant injury. On the other hand, the Phillies still have the best record in baseball despite all their injury problems, so I'm not sure how much these things actually make a difference. It sure seems like Phillies games won't even matter much until the fall.
