On Friday, the Washington Capitals waved goodbye to one of their goalies. 23-year-old goaltender Semyon Varlamov has been dealt to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for an impressive set of draft picks. The Caps will receive a first-round pick in the 2012 Draft, as well as a second-round pick in either 2012 or 2013.
Semyon Varlamov Traded To Avalanche; Capitals To Receive Draft Picks
Dump 'N Chase notes that Michal Neuvirth and Braden Holtby figure to split the goaltending duties for the Caps next season. Our Caps blog, Japers' Rink, surmised that a trade was in Varlamov's future. Here is some sentiment that was posted only hours before the deal was announced.
It’s been something of a rollercoaster ride with Varly, hasn’t it? From the goofy young prospect who barely spoke English to the savior of the 2009 playoff run to the oft-injured goalie whose maladies caused him to lose the starting job this past season. Still, he’s provided the Caps - and Caps fans - with some great memories of stolen games, breathtaking saves and blowing stuff...up.
