Semyon Varlamov and the Colorado Avalanche agreed to terms on a two-year contract just hours after a trade was completed on Friday. The Avalanche sent two 2012 NHL Draft picks, a first-round and conditional second-round pick, to the Washington Capitals for Varlamov's services, but still needed to work out a contract to keep him in the NHL.
Semyon Varlamov Signs Two-Year Contract With Colorado Avalanche, According To Report
According to a report, Varlamov inked a two-year, $5.5 million deal with the Avalanche, far less than he was reportedly seeking.
Update: Gord Miller reports that Varlamov signed a two-year, $5.5 million deal. Miller compares it to Carey Price‘s deal with Montreal. It’s a pretty affordable cap hit for Varly, especially when there were rumors that he wanted $4 million per year. That’s not a bad contract after the Avalanche gave up such big assets to get him.
The deal works out well for Colorado, who needed a goalie and pounced when Varlamov became available. With an affordable price, the Avalanche shored-up an area of need, at least in the immediate future.
