Last Sunday, in the midst of an Orioles-Red Sox series laced with bad blood, Vladimir Guerrero was forced from the game after being hit on the hand by a pitch from Boston rookie Welland. Following the All-Star break, the Orioles played the Indians (and lost, again) Thursday night but Guerrero wasn't in the lineup. As Jeff Zrebiec notes, pictures have been taken:
Vladimir Guerrero Injury: X-Ray Reveals Crack
Vlad Guerrero said that x-rays taken yesterday showed a little bit of a "crack" in a bone in right hand. He's hoping to play through it.
You know, because Guerrero was playing so well before he had a broken right hand.
Vlad's earning $8 million this season. After hitting .300/.345/.496 last season with the Rangers, this season Guerrero is hitting .279/.315/.385 ... easily the worst numbers of his stellar career. It's certainly possible that, given enough plate appearances, he will rediscover the talents that seem to have disappeared last winter. It's unlikely that he'll find them while playing with a broken bone in one of those $4 million hands.
Because Guerrero hasn’t played since the 10th, placing him on the DL would knock him out of the lineup for just another 10 days. Seems like the obvious move, doesn’t it?
