Giants defensive lineman Osi Umenyiora has two years and just over $7 million remaining on a $41 million deal he signed in 2005 and now he wants to restructure his deal that includes a nice pay raise.
Giants’ Osi Umenyiora Wants Trade Or New Contract, According To Report
His leverage? Holding out of camp.
According to NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora (and first reported by WFAN in New York), Umenyiora wants a trade or a new deal. La Canfora reports he won’t be in New York for his physical this morning but could show up later in the day.
So what do the Giants do?
Umenyiora is coming off of an injury so his value may not be as high as he wants it to be. The best course may be for the Giants to give him a short-term bump to his deal if he’s unhappy but it sounds like the Giants may not budge on this one. Reports suggest this could be a sticky situation for both sides.
If they’re looking to trade him, there is certainly a market for him. Pass-rushers make a lot of coin so there would undoubtedly be teams willing to pony up a pick for him.
We shall see. Giants report to camp on Friday.
