It's been a strange offseason for New York Giants DE Osi Umenyiora. First, he's unhappy with his contract and requested a trade, which the Giants briefly granted before rescinding permission for him to seek a trade. Second, he's been having trouble with a knee injury which resulted in him missing some time.
Osi Umenyiora’s Injury Requires Surgery; Out 3-4 Weeks
We now have more details on that second point, his knee injury. The Giants announced on Friday morning that Umenyiora would be undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. The recovery time is 3-4 weeks which means he could be in danger of missing the regular season opener.
Giants GM Jerry Reese explained the situation in a statement on the Giants website:
“Osi called me at the end of the day yesterday to let me know that he wanted to have the surgery now,” said General Manager Jerry Reese. “After practicing for three days he had some swelling in the knee, and it was clear that we were going to have to adjust his practice routine to every other day to maintain his knee.”
Umenyiora’s main reason for doing it now is so that he’s healthy for the rest of the season and doesn’t have to worry about the knee.
“Osi’s feeling is he wants to get it cleaned up now because he is looking forward to playing this season, and he wants to do it without the knee being an issue for him. He told me how much he really enjoyed being back on the field this week, and he’s looking forward to getting back out there once he recovers from the procedure.”
While Umenyiora will miss the next 3-4 weeks, and perhaps the early part of the season, he’s doing this in order to be healthy for the entire year. We’ll see how it works out.
