The extensive saga of Osi Umenyiora appears to be over, at least for now. The disgruntled New York Giants defensive end returned to the practice field for the first time this offseason on Monday afternoon and was instantly inserted into the team's starting lineup.
Osi Umenyiora Returns To Giants Camp, Installed As Starter
Umenyiora reenters the Giants after recovering from a knee injury that required him to see an Atlanta specialist last week. Though, it was a well-publicized contract holdout that kept the 29-year-old away from camp for so long, and as much as New York would love to have it resolved, the issue may still have some legs, as teammate Justin Tuck explained to the New York Daily News.
“You know, just because he’s back on the football field doesn’t mean this whole saga is over. I mean he’s not happy with his contract. Everyone knows that. . . . I don’t think he’s going to let that affect his play or affect how this football team prepares for the game. But it ain’t necessarily over.”
Umenyiora is fresh off a season in which he recorded 11.5 sacks and a Giants-record 10 forced fumbles. He, alongside Tuck and second-year end Jason Pierre-Paul, are expected to spearhead a New York defensive unit that aims to contend with the refashioned Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East.
