Alex Cobb Injury: Rays Rookie Having Season-Ending Rib Surgery
Further testing, though, found a reason. Marc Topkin:
But [Cobb] felt something unusual in his arm prior to his last start on Saturday, and when he told the Rays about it after the game he was sent for a series of tests. Further testing revealed the blockage [in his ribs].
Cobb has a blockage near his first rib on his right side, and while it hasn’t been made clear just what that actually means, it’s apparently not that difficult to fix, and Cobb will undergo surgery on Friday. The surgery will end Cobb’s 2011 season, but he’ll be ready to go in plenty of time for 2012.
Cobb’s season ends with a 3.42 ERA posted over nine starts. Without him, the Rays simply shift from a six-man to a five-man rotation.
