Now that Steve Smith has reportedly signed a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, the war of words has poked its way into the social media world. On his Facebook page, Smith gives an indication on why he signed with the Eagles over his former team, the Giants:
Steve Smith Signs With Eagles, Says Philly Wanted Him ‘Much More’ Than New York
[T]he eagles wanted me to be part of their organization MUCH more than the Giants did..
How much more? According to Mike Garafolo, Smith’s new deal is a one-year contract worth $4 million, including $2 million in guarantees. Geoff Musher reports that the Giants were unable to offer a competing contract to Smith.
It originally appeared as though the Giants were favorites to land Smith since he was recovering from microfracture surgery, but, just like this entire free agency period, the Eagles swooped in and made an offer too good to be overcome by others. The Giants believed he would miss the first month or so of the season, but Smith believes he is “pretty close” to playing. Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News, among others, reports that Smith may not begin the season on the physically unable to perform list.
